PROVIDENCE – Rhode Island manufacturers are invited to a Design Thinking Forum on Friday from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at Rhode Island School of Design.

Polaris MEP (Manufacturing Extension Partnership), a division of the University of Rhode Island Research Foundation, and Rhode Island School of Design Executive Education are holding the forum, which will be led by Charlie Cannon, department head and associate professor of industrial design at RISD.
Registration is available HERE.

U.S. Sen. Jack F. Reed will address attendees at the end of the session and discuss the congressional delegation’s support for $2.9 million in federal funding to advance growth in the state’s defense manufacturing sector.

The forum is geared to defense-related and other manufacturers so that they can learn about new offerings made possible through the federal funding.

The session will focus on concepts around integrating design strategy into growing a manufacturing business; this is a predecessor to a new Design in Manufacturing Innovation Certificate program being offered by RISD Executive Education this fall for free to qualifying manufacturers.

“Rhode Island has a strong defense, technology and design industry, but we need to constantly look ahead and ensure we’re preparing for the future,” Reed said in a statement.

Participants also will learn more about the Manufacturing Innovation Challenge, a competitive opportunity available for free through Polaris MEP. Through the challenge, qualifying R.I. manufacturers can access more than $1 million of available funding, expertise and design and product development talent. All manufacturers are encouraged to Take the Challenge by visiting www.manufacturinginnovationchallenge.com. Deadline is June 22 at noon.
