Generating diverse revenue streams is important in any business – even a dermatology practice.

Dr. Antonio P. Cruz, who specializes in treating skin cancer as well as cosmetic surgery, said business is burgeoning.

Since he opened SkinPros LLC in 2013, treatment for basal and squamous cell carcinomas and melanoma have increased 43.7 percent, an upward trend brought on by stronger ultraviolet rays from the sun. At the same time, interest in cosmetic surgery has snowballed, Cruz said.

Through two acquisitions as well as organic growth, Providence-based SkinPros has added 10,000 patients to its roster. Meanwhile, the staff has grown from about five employees to 22.

“I think we’re going to be busy for a long time because everybody loves the sun,” said Cruz.

The majority of revenue is generated from surgeries to remove potentially dangerous growths, such as melanoma. Meanwhile, roughly 30 percent of the business is cosmetic and paid for out of patients’ pockets, according to Fernando Mendes, SkinPros’ accounting manager.

By acquiring locations in Cumberland and Newport, Cruz has been able to reach underserved populations vying for dermatology and cancer treatment, as well as Botox injections and laser hair removal.

For Cruz, keeping a hand in both areas of medicine isn’t just good for the bottom line.

“If it were all cancer all the time, I’d probably go crazy,” Cruz said. •
