PROVIDENCE – An interactive map that shows one dot for every job location in America unsurprisingly shows a cluster of job activity around Providence, with health care, education and government the dominant sector.
Red dots represent manufacturing and trade, while blue dots are professional services. Green represents health care, education and government. Yellow is retail, hospitality and other services.
Other cities in the state show plenty of job activity, including Cranston, Warwick and Woonsocket.
The Quonset Business Park in North Kingstown is marked with a patch of red, representing manufacturing and trade, while a cluster of manufacturing and trade also can be found near T.F. Green Airport in Warwick.
Newport is dominated by retail, hospitality and other services, with some professional services and health care, education positions and a smattering of government jobs.
The “Where are the Jobs?” map was created by Robert Manduca, a Harvard PhD student in sociology and a mapmaker who used 2010 Longitudinal Employer-Household Dynamics data from the U.S. Census Bureau. The data is based on state unemployment insurance records, and tabulates the count of jobs by census block.
