Marcotte lauded for leadership

ANDREA MARCOTTE, chief medical officer and vice president of WellOne Primary Medical and Dental Care, was recently awarded the Clinical Leadership Award from the Rhode Island Health Center Association. The award is presented annually to a health-center clinician who best demonstrates continued clinical excellence and professional development, innovation in practice or policies, and leadership in areas that benefit the system of care.

What are some of the steps you take at WellOne to ensure clinical excellence?

Our history of clinical excellence is based in an organization-wide quality improvement program that focuses on clinical outcomes, the patient experience and a commitment to recruiting and retaining highly qualified staff. We routinely measure quality of care indicators, as well as patient satisfaction, taking steps to identify areas for improvement and following an action plan to achieve superior clinical outcomes.

Our commitment to the patient/staff interaction experience is highly valued at WellOne. Considerable time and effort was invested in customizing the electronic medical record to enable it to be used as a tool for providing better care, in a manner that allows the provider to continue to place the focus on the patient interaction. WellOne has received national recognition as a Level 3 Patient Centered Medical Home and we continually strive to ensure that we are excelling in meeting these standards.

What can be done to make quality health care more accessible to all Rhode Islanders?

Rhode Island, amongst other states, has seen a tremendous improvement in access to health care since the inception of the Affordable Care Act. Nationwide, we are all facing the possibility for significant changes in our health care system. The Affordable Care Act has made possible health coverage for many who were once without. The program has [also] expanded access to preventative health care screenings. As a nation, and a state, we need to make sure that our voices are heard to continue to ensure access to health care for all, regardless of ability to pay. •
