PROVIDENCE – Margaret M. “Peg” Van Bree has been appointed president of Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital.
The appointment is effective Jan. 5.
Van Bree will succeed Dr. Timothy J. Babineau, who has served as Rhode Island Hospital president since 2008 and will continue in his role as president and CEO of the Lifespan system.

Lifespan is the state’s largest health system, and Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital are under its umbrella.

“Rhode Island Hospital and Hasbro Children’s Hospital play a unique and essential role in the care provided to people in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts, so it was important to find the most qualified individual to lead this great institution. I believe we’ve done this with Dr. Van Bree,” Babineau said in a statement announcing the appointment.

“During our extensive national search, Dr. Van Bree stood out because of her experience and leadership in implementing innovative approaches to quality, her knowledge of large academic medical centers and her success in advancing and elevating hospitals’ critical service lines. She is uniquely qualified to accelerate our ongoing efforts to elevate Rhode Island Hospital to the top level of quality performance nationwide,” he added.

In a statement, Van Bree said she is “thrilled” to join an organization known for its high-quality, cutting-edge care.

“I know that for the past 150 years, Rhode Island Hospital has been essential to the well-being of the people in southern New England. I look forward to working closely with physicians and caregivers, and engaging the entire Rhode Island Hospital community, to ensure its continued rise to national preeminence in the coming decades,” Van Bree said.

Van Bree comes to Rhode Island Hospital after having served as CEO of St. Luke’s Medical Center in Houston through the end of last year. Previous to that, Van Bree was senior vice president and chief operating officer of the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison, Wis. She also has served as the chief operations officer at the University of Virginia Health System, and as senior vice president and chief operating officer at the University of Minnesota Medical Center-Fairview and Amplatz Children’s Hospital.

She has been the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions. Most recently, she was named to Becker’s Hospital Review’s 100 Leaders of Great Hospitals in America and 130 Women Hospital and Health System Leaders to Know.

Van Bree received a doctor of public health degree from Tulane University and a master of hospital administration from University of Minnesota School of Public Health.
