Marshfield Commons construction begins

NORTH SMITHFIELD – Construction of the Marshfield Commons affordable housing complex has begun, builder New England Construction has announced.
The project, led by developer NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley, includes 17 walk-up buildings, 38 rental apartments and a community center near Slatersville Village.
The $11 million project is being built on 8 acres and 75 percent of the land will be preserved as open space. It is scheduled to be completed late in 2012.
NeighborWorks Blackstone Valley, a nonprofit developer for northern Rhode Island, received $1.3 million in grants and loans from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Boston for Marshfield Commons.
O’Hearne Associates of North Smithfield is providing architectural services for the project.
“NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley’s projects make affordable housing available to low-and-moderate-income individuals and families while preserving the character of the land and surrounding community,” said Ainsley Morisseau Cantoral, Director of Communications for NWBRV. “Projects like this also act as a catalyst for economic development. Not only do projects like this put local folks to work building the housing, they spur additional investments and attract new residents and consumers to the marketplace.”
