Martha’s Vineyard radio to remain on R.I. airwaves
MYVRADIO.COM and Rhode Island Public Radio have reached and agreement for the formerly online-only broadcaster to continue operating on its Newport signal.

NEWPORT – An agreement between Martha’s Vineyard’s once Internet-exclusive mvyradio.com and Rhode Island Public Radio will allow the Massachusetts-based station to continue operating on its Newport signal, reaching listeners on the surrounding Aquidneck Island and town of Narragansett.
Following the sale of mvyradio’s former broadcast outlet at WMVY-FM 92.7, the station relied on Internet presence. To continue operating, nonprofit Friends of mvyradio launched a fundraising campaign, generating $600,000 in funding from dedicated listeners in Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
“The passion and concern of our Newport listeners during the Save mvyradio campaign was very evident,” PJ Finn, mvyradio program director, said in prepared remarks. “In just a few short years on 96.5, we have made a strong connection to Aquidneck Island, and are thrilled that this connection will remain strong.”
Its “mildly complex” deal with RIPR allows the station to continue transmitting from Newport’s 96.5 FM signal, which is available for both HD radio and typical FM radio listeners. Mvyradio has maintained a broadcast on Newport’s 96.5 FM station, owned by David Maxson, for the last 10 years.
“Rhode Island Public Radio is delighted to assist mvyradio to keep its unique and quality music programming on-the-air on Aquidneck Island,” Joseph O’Connor, GM of Rhode Island Public Radio, said in a statement.
Mvyradio began streaming its programs online in 1998 and also broadcasts from WMVY-FM 92.7 in Tisbury, Mass., offering “quirky, local, island-flavored music and information service,” noted a station release.
RIPR, which operates out of Providence, broadcasts from WELH-FM 88.1 for Providence, WRNI-FM 102.7 for South County/Aquidneck and WCVY-FM 91.5 in Coventry and is dedicated to local news reporting and programs.
