Mass. adds 1,200 jobs in Oct., rate unchanged

BOSTON – Massachusetts added 1,200 jobs in October for a total preliminary estimate of 3,424,600, according to the Mass. Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development. The October total unemployment rate remained unchanged at 6 percent.
According to the office, Massachusetts has added a net of 52,600 jobs since October 2013. More than 50,000 of those jobs were added in the private sector. The total unemployment rate for the year is down 1.2 percent from the October 2013 rate of 7.2 percent.
Information services led the gains, adding 1,900 jobs over the month. Construction gained 1,300 jobs over the month, while the education and health-services sector added 800 jobs. Professional, scientific and business services gained 200 jobs.
Trade, transportation and utilities saw the greatest losses, dropping 1,800 jobs. Leisure and hospitality lost 1,500 jobs, while manufacturing lost 400 jobs.
In the public sector, government jobs grew by 1,200 for the month. •
