Mass. audit: $35M in ‘questionable’ payments

BOSTON – A state audit has identified $35 million of what were deemed ‘‘questionable and unallowable’’ payments by the state’s Medicaid program, The Associated Press reported this month.
The audit focused on the Mass. Department of Health’s Limited Program, which covers eligible noncitizens. While rules are supposed to restrict coverage under the program to emergency medical services, auditors found that the department often paid claims even when a provider indicated that a service was not of an emergency nature, the AP said.
Auditor Suzanne Bump told the AP that her office and the department disagree in their interpretations of federal and state rules that govern the program. •
