Mass. seeking proposals for Crop Block program

Posted 2/20/12

BOSTON – Officials from the Mass. Department of Agricultural Resources last week announced that $400,000 will be made available to specialty crop producers through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Specialty Crop Block Grant Program.

According to a news release, the grants aim to help strengthen the market for specialty crops such as fruits, vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture and nursery crops. With the awarding of these grants, the Massachusetts department is beginning the Request for Response (RFR) process.

The Specialty Crop Block Grant Program supports initiatives that: increase specialty-crop nutritional knowledge and consumption, improve distribution-system efficiency, enhance food safety and expand food access in underserved communities, among other things.

The RFR and all necessary documents, proposal submission requirements and deadlines can be found at www.comm-pass.com. •
