40 UNDER FORTY

Matthew G. Dempsey

Why did you select your profession?

My father has been in the trade for many years. I worked for construction companies growing up through high school and college. Digging ditches when it was 100 degrees out wasn’t fun, so I agreed with my father that an engineering degree would help!

Where do you see yourself professionally in 10 years?

Ideally, I’ll be working with the same team.

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever been given?

Chase clients, not projects.

What is your favorite escape or hobby?

Changing diapers for my 20-month-old … sorry, did you say least favorite?

How do you keep a work-life balance?

I live close to work.

What one thing in your professional life would you like a do-over on?

I wouldn’t have gone on that company-sponsored, whitewater rafting trip with people that can’t swim very well. No one got hurt, but man was that scary. •
