McCoy attendance down, but optimism high

PAWTUCKET – Attendance at McCoy Stadium is down dramatically through the first 18 home games of 2016, but Pawtucket Red Sox officials are chalking it up almost entirely to unprecedented bad weather for baseball.

Bill Wanless, vice president of communications and community relations, said attendance over the 18 games stood at 70,877, compared with 91,479 last year, but said all signs point to a better base of support for the team in 2016. There is no indication of any ill feelings that may have been present last year when the team was talking about leaving Pawtucket, The Valley Breeze reported.

“There’s been a great vibe in the ballpark,” he said. “The fans are really enjoying themselves.” •
