Rhode Island’s political leaders are eager to point to the “Eds and Meds” sector as a key to the region’s future economic health. Thankfully, the sector is not waiting around for local public support. Exhibit A: MedMates.
Founded in the wake of the 2012 Make It Happen Rhode Island session, MedMates is designed to create a health-technology ecosystem in which emerging and mature companies meet, learn about one another, collaborate and potentially innovate, eventually becoming a virtuous cycle of growth.
As the group approaches its first anniversary, it has set an ambitious agenda, especially given its all-volunteer participation.
The coming year, in which the organization plans to hire an executive director and implement its shared agenda – create a startup “launch pad,” connect members within industry subsectors and influence policy at the state level – is a crucial one. But given the effort shown so far, there is no reason to think MedMates won’t succeed. •
