Medical school and hospice co-founder dies

PROVIDENCE – Dr. Stanley Aronson, who cofounded the Alpert Medical School of Brown University and Home & Hospice Care of Rhode Island, died at the center he founded, on Jan. 28.

As founding dean of the medical school at Brown, Aronson created one of the first departments of family medicine in 1978. He said in interviews that he had not anticipated the later growth that the medical school achieved.

Aronson’s specialty was neuropathology, and his first appointment in Rhode Island was with Brown and the Miriam Hospital as chief of pathology.

He served as editor of the Rhode Island Medical Journal from 1989 to 1998 and wrote for newspapers and blogs up until his passing.
