Meeting Street breaks record with $1M from telethon

PROVIDENCE – Meeting Street raised more than $1 million at an annual telethon that coincided with celebration of its 70th year in fostering child development, education, research and training.
Held Jan. 30 and broadcast by WPRI 12, the record-breaking four-hour telethon surpassed last year’s event by more than $215,000, reaching a total of $1,078,520.
“We are blown away by the results of this year’s telethon and are so thankful to have a wonderful community of supporters who believe in our mission,” said John M. Kelly, president of Meeting Street. “These funds allow Meeting Street to be an innovative leader in education and enable our professionals to educate and support nearly 5,000 children and their families each year in the Meeting Street way that is all about compassion, learning and opportunity.”
More than 600 staff, community leaders, and students and their families participated in the telethon at Meeting Street’s Providence campus and at The Schwartz Center in Dartmouth, Mass., during the live broadcast.
Hosted by WPRI 12 news anchors and Meeting Street students, the event offered an inside look at each location, special segments featuring children in Meeting Street’s programs and live interviews with supporters, staff and families. It also included a focus on the Schwartz Center partnership, and how, by working together, the organization is now able to serve nearly 5,000 children each year.
Founded in 1946, the nonprofit aims to empower children and their families by fostering the development of the whole child. Core programs include Early Intervention, Early Head Start, Olneyville Initiative, Healthy Families America, The Early Learning Center, The Grace School, The Carter School and The Schwartz Center.
