Memorial launches low-dose chest CT screening for lung cancer

PAWTUCKET – Memorial Hospital recently began offering low dose chest computed tomography scans to help with the early detection and treatment of lung cancer.

Dr. David Rowe, a Memorial radiologist, said that the new scans are safer than previous chest CT scans.

“Screening high-risk patients with low-dose CT scans is especially effective for diagnosing lung cancer at its earliest, most treatable stage,” Rowe said.

About 85 percent of lung cancer occurs in current or former smokers. There are approximately 94 million current and former smokers in the United States.
