Memorial team focusing on obesity in Hispanic children

PROVIDENCE – With childhood obesity among Hispanic children even more prevalent than among the general population, researchers at Memorial Hospital recently published a study examining the subject.

Entitled “Reducing Hispanic Children’s Obesity Risk Factors in the First 1,000 Days of Life: A Qualitative Analysis,” the study was published in the Journal of Obesity and was co-authored by Roberta Goldman of Memorial.

The research team found that Hispanic mothers often believe that a chubby baby is a healthy baby and also felt compelled to make sure that their babies felt full. The authors determined that there are many opportunities to improve the mothers’ understanding of the role of early weight gain in childhood obesity.
