Men’s Health Night tie contest nets $11K

WARWICK – An “ugly tie” fundraiser for the Rhode Island Blood Center’s first-ever Men’s Health Night raised $11,000 on Nov. 20.
The event, held at the Crowne Plaza Providence-Warwick and attended by more than 100 people, also featured health information and screenings, a silent and live auction, and a tie swap. Funding will be put toward the Blood Center’s educational and recruitment efforts.
Ed Zaborski of Lincoln won Ugly Tie honors after defeating runner-up Joe Swinski of Cranston in a “tie-breaker.” Zaborski, whose winning tie featured floating pizza slices, received a trophy and $100 cash price.
Judges for the tie contest were: Ivy DePew, Miss Rhode Island; Jessica Schiano of 92 WPRO-FM and Dennis Iannotti, co-founder of Nuts ‘N More.
Founded in 1979, the Blood Center collects about 280 units of blood every day for use to patients in Rhode Island and nearby Massachusetts and Connecticut, and is the sole supplier of blood products to hospitals in Rhode Island. For information, visit www.ribc.org.
