NARRAGANSET – The Metcalf Institute for Marine & Environmental Reporting will host a science translation workshop at the first-ever joint private and federal conference focused on the Gulf of Mexico oil spill and ecosystem science.

The science translation workshop for journalists will be led by Metcalf Institute Executive Director Sunshine Menezes on the first day of the Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill & Ecosystem Science Conference. The conference will take place in New Orleans on Jan. 21 – 23, 2013.

The two-hour workshop is designed to help journalists better understand and communicate the complicated scientific findings that will come out of the three-day conference. Topics include helping journalists outline the steps scientists take as they progress from developing a research question to publishing their findings, sharing tips for interpreting scientific data and commonly used statistic tools, and discussing some of the most newsworthy findings expected to be presented at the conference by researchers.

The conference will include a keynote address by retired U.S. Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen, who led the federal government’s response to the 2010 BP oil spill, as well as a panel of five speakers and 19 scientific sessions, among other events.
