PROVIDENCE – Sen. Joshua Miller, D-Cranston, and Rep. Joseph M. McNamara, D-Warwick, have been named Legislators of the Year by the Rhode Island Association of Nurse Anesthetists.
According to a news release, the two legislators were honored by the association during a Legislator Reception held at the Providence Marriott Downtown. They were recognized for championing legislation that advanced the practice of nurse anesthesia in Rhode Island.
Prior to the legislation being enacted, Rhode Island was one of seven states in the nation and the only New England state that required supervision of certified registered nurse anesthetists. As a result, they had been prohibited from ordering diagnostic tests or pre- or post-operative medications. As a result of the legislation submitted by Miller and McNamara, CRNAs and all advance practice nurses are now able to practice more independently.
The final bill passed unanimously in both chambers and was signed into law by the governor. •
