PROVIDENCE – Becker’s Hospital Review issued its list of 100 hospitals in the United States with great orthopedic programs, and The Miriam Hospital is Rhode Island’s only facility on the list.

The hospital, part of Lifespan, is home to the Total Joint Center, a program of the Orthopedic Institute at The Miriam, Rhode Island, and Newport hospitals.

Hospitals included in Becker’s 2016 ranking, which was released last month, have been recognized for excellence across various publications, industry-leading organizations and accrediting organizations, according to The Miriam Hospital release announcing the results.

In nearby Massachusetts, Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital and New England Baptist – all in Boston – have been named to this listing.

“Achieving this ranking is great acknowledgement of the unprecedented integrated way The Miriam Hospital delivers total joint replacement for the hip, knee and shoulder,” Dr. John A. Froehlich, the Total Joint Center’s program director, said in the statement. “In using the most advanced technologies and continually focusing on meeting high standards, the Total Joint Center embodies The Miriam Hospital’s constant commitment to excellent patient-centered care.”

The editorial team of Becker’s, a leading health care industry business publication, includes hospitals based on analysis of several ranking and award agencies; its website states that hospitals cannot pay to be included on the list.

U.S. News and World Report top hospitals for orthopedics and hip and knee replacements, CareChex rankings for orthopedic care and surgery, Blue Distinction Centers for hip and knee replacement, Healthgrades excellence awards for joint replacement and orthopedic surgery, Joint Commission certification for hip and knee replacement and Magnet accreditation are among the rankings Becker’s turns to in compiling its annual list.

The Miriam, named 2015-16 best regional hospital in Rhode Island and the Providence metro area by U.S. News & World Report, has been awarded Magnet Recognition for Excellence in Nursing Services five times, the hospital reported.

The Total Joint Center at The Miriam Hospital coordinates patient care across the continuum, individualizing the care to achieve patient-centered goals. Excellent surgical technique, relationship-based nursing care and interdisciplinary collaboration result in superior patient outcomes, the hospital reported, noting that The Total Joint Center has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for its total knee and total hip replacement programs and is a Blue Cross Blue Shield Blue Distinction Center for knee and hip replacement.
