PROVIDENCE – The Miriam Hospital was recently awarded a special designation for bariatric surgery conferred by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island.

A designation by the Blue Distinction Centers for Specialty Care program indicates that according to objective criteria a hospital is delivering a high level of patient safety and better health outcomes.

Miriam is among the first hospitals in the nation to receive the designation for its bariatric surgery center.

“The Center for Bariatric Surgery features a dedicated team of specialists – from surgeons, physicians, and nurse practitioners to behavioral therapists, nutritionists, physical therapists and nurses – all with expertise in weight loss surgery – and all committed to working alongside patients to achieve each patient’s goals,” said Dr. Siva Vithiananthan, chief of minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at Miriam. “The Blue Distinction Center+ designation supports the comprehensive care and exceptional outcomes we deliver to bariatric patients throughout Rhode Island and surrounding communities.”
