Mollis urges nonprofits to use online filing tool

PROVIDENCE – Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis is reminding Rhode Island’s more than 7,900 nonprofit corporations that they can beat the state’s July 30 deadline for submitting annual reports by filing online at www.sos.ri.gov.

“We have made complying with the law as easy as possible and are doing all that we can to make them aware of the deadline,” said Mollis in a prepared statement.

Under state law, the state’s nonprofit organizations – ranging from hospitals to housing developers – must file before the July 30 deadline.

Failure to file can result in fines and the revocation of the nonprofit’s certificate of incorporation or certificate of authority – making it illegal for them to conduct business-related activities in the state.

According to a release, the online filing option is meant to make the filingprocess easier and faster and – for security purposes – every organization has a Customer Identification Number and Personal Identification Number.

“Enhancing our technology makes it easier to do business with us. Our virtual office is open 24/7, so nonprofits can file when it is convenient for them,” said Mollis. “The online option also lowers our costs and gives the public access to the reports faster.”

Mollis added that he hopes the reminder hopes the reminder will help nonprofit avoid unnecessary expenses, in these tough economic times.

Nonprofits have the option to file online at www.sos.ri.gov, or file by mail or in person at the Secretary of State’s Division of Business Services, 148 West River St., Providence.
