After losing her husband, Linda Lucini found it difficult to prepare meals and eat properly. But then her employer, Providence-based Moran Shipping Agencies Inc., offered a course through its wellness program that seemed tailor-made for her: “Healthy Kitchen Makeover.” Over four weeks, she learned how to purchase and prepare healthy food.
“[Moran] is dedicated to keeping its employees healthy and informed,” she said.
With 20 offices serving 100-plus ports, Moran launched its wellness program a little over five years ago as a means to improve the lives of its workers.
“Without healthy and happy employees, we don’t have a successful business,” said Wellness Coordinator Michael Sullivan.
The program offers events dedicated to all facets of well-being. Recent topics of classes and lectures have included relationship management, sun safety and healthy cooking. A massage therapist has been on-site, and the company has also hosted flu clinics and blood drives.
A partnership with ShapeUp RI provides employees with pedometers. They are also offered a discounted membership at Healthtrax Fitness & Wellness Center in Warwick.
Success stories have abounded and morale has increased, Sullivan said, and workers have become the driving force behind the company’s culture of wellness.
“You’ll see employees going out in groups to walk during lunch … and challenging each other to live a healthier lifestyle,” he said
