PAWTUCKET – WJAR-TV NBC 10 and Shred-It’s ninth annual ‘Great Shredding Event’ destroyed more than 52,000 pounds of confidential documents on Saturday, April 21, the television station announced Monday.

More than 26 tons of material – 3.5 tons more than 2011 – was destroyed at this year’s event, which took place in the parking lot of McCoy Stadium.

“This year’s ‘Great Shredding Event’ beat all records,” Kim Reis, WJAR-TV NBC 10’s digital media and marketing director said in a statement.

“The line remained steady all day and the good news is that it moved quickly,” she added. “People said they had an average wait time of about 15 minutes which is impressive knowing we destroyed more than 26 tons of material.”

The confidential documents were loaded into secure Shred-It trucks where they wre shredded into “tiny, unidentifiable pieces,” according to a release.

The scraps will be recycled into other paper products, such as toilet paper and tissue paper.
