PROVIDENCE – Park is the most common street name in the Ocean State, as well as in Connecticut and Massachusetts, according to a study conducted by The Washington Post.
It also happens to be the most popular road name in the nation based on 2014 road data, as 9,640 roads are named “Park” out of more than a million.
In Rhode Island, there are 29 roads named “Park.” That’s closely followed by 24 named “Shore,” in an obvious nod to Ocean State geography. Maple is third with 23; Highland and Pine with 22 each; and Cedar, Meadow, Narragansett, River and Wood, with 20 each, according to the report.
“Road names are a piece of history. They encode the culture and geography of America,” the article states.
“Trees, numbers and presidents are the most popular names for streets,” the newspaper continued, adding they are understandable choices, as they are practical and inoffensive.
Nationwide, following Park, the rest of the top 10 are as follows: 2nd/Second with 8,232 roads; Oak, 8,191; 1st/First, 8,151; 3rd/Third, 7,748; Maple, 7,608; Pine, 7.013; 4th/Fourth, 6,914; Cedar, 6,805; and Main, 6,472.
