Museum of Work & Culture annual drive raises $27K

WOONSOCKET – The Museum of Work & Culture’s annual appeal drive concluded on March 20 after generating $27,600 in donations.

When the drive began in November the museum sent out almost 2,000 letters of appeal to friends of the museum asking them to purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win a trip to Quebec City. It cost $15 for a sheet of raffle tickets and, in addition, the museum asked those who could afford it to include an additional gift.

This year, said Anne Conway, the museum’s director: “Donations exceeded raffle ticket sales; we received more than $15,000 in donations.”

While Conway said the amount of donations is “comparable” to previous years, they are nonetheless appreciative.

“People are very generous and we’re grateful to a large number of museum members and supporters in our community,” she said.

On March 20th Salute to Spring, the final event in the annual drive and an annual occurrence on the museum’s calendar, concluded the fundraising initiative. Known as Francophonie day, a celebration honoring the diversity of French culture across the world, there were Malian drummers, a crepe demonstration and a marionette artist.

During the event the tickets to Quebec City, which were donated by Conway Tours, were raffled off to Dan Gendron.

In addition, 30 gift certificates to area attractions also were raffled to attendees and members of the museum community.

Proceeds from the annual appeal will go to help cover the day-to-day operational costs of the museum including multiple educational programs and the winter lecture series.

Located in Woonsocket, the Museum of Work & Culture is open Tuesday through Friday 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sundays 1 to 4 p.m. The museum is closed Mondays.
