Musicians recognized in national competition

After learning to play music at the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket, Marlin DaCruz and David Kendrick used their skills to write an original hip-hop tune that ranked within the top five submissions in a national competition.
DaCruz and Kendrick, both 17, composed the music for, wrote the lyrics to and then recorded “Dream Big, Save Your Money,” at the club, where they are both still members. The duo then entered the song into the 2013 Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Charles Schwab Foundation Money Matters Music Mogul contest and, as runner-ups, they will now receive a $500 scholarship.
Kendrick, known to his friends as “Your Boy Big D,” lives in Providence and is a junior at Hope High School. He said he hopes to beome a youth leader at the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket and attend the Community College of Rhode Island.
DaCruz resides in East Providence and is a junior at East Providence High School. He plans to attend a four-year college in New York City and double major in music production and business.
