Rhode Island Education Commissioner Deborah Gist praised WJAR-TV NBC10 and Hasbro Inc. for their support during the 2011-2012 school year in recognizing area teachers.

During a recent joint session of the Rhode Island General Assembly, Gist specifically thanked Hasbro, NBC 10 News Director Chris Lanni and NBC 10 News Anchor Patrice Wood for their efforts.

Together, the organizations presented 19 Golden Apple Awards to teachers who were recognized for making their classrooms fun and safe places for learning. Award recipients were featured in weekly news stories presented by Wood, in addition to receiving $250 donorschoose.org gift cards from Hasbro to help them purchase classroom items.

“We received hundreds of nominations and it was great to see how many wonderful educators we have in our communities,” said Chris Lanni, NBC 10 news director.

During the presentation, a number of Golden Apple recipients in the House chamber were applauded for their dedication to Rhode Island students. •
