NBC 10 tops local news ratings in July

PROVIDENCE – WJAR-TV NBC 10 led its local competitors in total viewership in July and led the country in one time slot, according to Nielsen Co. data for the month provided by the station. WPRI-TV CBS 12 and WNAC-TV Fox 64 won key demographics across several time slots.
NBC 10’s 6 a.m., 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts were the most-watched in the region and increased in viewership from July of last year. NBC 10 brought in 35,960 viewers at 6 a.m., up from 33,480 in July 2012, an increase of 7.4 percent. The station’s 6 p.m. viewership jumped 34.8 percent, to 51,150 from 37,944. At 11 p.m., viewership was 35,836, a 14.9 percent increase from July 2012’s 31,186.
The station’s 7 p.m. newscast was the most highly-rated programming in that time slot among all metered markets, which are media markets where viewership data is monitored with electronic meters and include the country’s largest markets, WJAR told Providence Business News. The newscast drew a 5.55 rating (the percentage of televisions tuned to the program versus the total number of TVs in the market).
NBC 10’s 7 p.m. news beat Wheel of Fortune in the same time slot for the second month this year.
CBS 12 and Fox Providence were No. 1 in several time slots among adults 18-49, a key advertising demographic. Eyewitness News at 10 p.m. on Fox Providence was first at that time and showed a 27 percent gain in that demographic, while Eyewitness News at 11 p.m. on WPRI 12 came in first and increased 23 percent year over year.
The station’s weekend programming topped the demographic as well, with Eyewitness News This Morning placing first on both Saturday and Sunday. The Sunday show on WPRI 12 increased 50 percent among adults 18-49 and 150 percent among women 25-54.
