THE NATIONAL LABOR Relations Board issued a complaint against Renaissance Providence Hotel owners the Procaccianti Group on Dec. 31, citing unfair labor practice charges brought by workers seeking to form a union.
PROVIDENCE – The National Labor Relations Board has issued a complaint against the owners of the Renaissance Providence Hotel based on unfair labor practice charges levied by workers seeking to form a union.
The NLRB issued the complaint on Dec. 31, adding hotel owners the Procaccianti Group, after citing TPG Hospitality Inc., the group’s hotel-management affiliate.
Unite Here! Local 217 is listed as the complainant charging that the hotel has violated the National Labor Relations Act by deterring workers from unionizing to improve low wages and benefits.
The complaint follows an eight-month investigation in which workers have called for a fair process to unionize, said Jenna Karlin, a union spokesperson. That union affiliation would not necessarily be with Local 217, she said.
The complaint means an NLRB administrative law judge will hear the case on March 31 in the agency’s Boston office.
The NLRB action follows an OSHA complaint filed last fall that the workers say has been settled.
Richard MacAdams, the Procaccianti Group’s chief legal counsel, did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
In December, at a rally with workers and union organizers, the Unitarian Universalist Church boycotted the hotel, withdrawing 847 reservations for a planned spring event in downtown Providence.
