NEWPORT – Three employees from the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Newport Division were selected as winners of the Rhode Island Federal Employees of the Year Award.

Denise Szelag, Joseph Murphy and Nicolina Kelly were honored for their professional accomplishments, technical excellence and compliance and humanitarian work.

The awards, announced Tuesday, were handed out by the Rhode Island Federal Executive Council.

Murphy, Director of Physical Operations, won the R.I. Federal Employee of the Year Award in the technical/compliance category. He is responsible for all environmental, safety, security, facilities and installation support programs at NUWC Newport and its satellite locations around the United States.

Kelly, a computer scientist in the Torpedo Systems Department, won the John H. Chafee Humanitarian of the Year award. During her non-working hours, Kelly supports and manages Infinity Volunteers – a nonprofit agency that involves high school students in humanitarian projects locally, nationally and internationally.

This is the first time in 12 years that three NUWC Newport employees have been honored in the same year.
