NUWC’s McCormack honored by UMass Dartmouth

NEWPORT – Donald McCormack, technical director at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, has been awarded the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth’s 2012 Alumni Association Achievement Award.

The Alumni Association Achievement Award is presented to a UMass Dartmouth alumnus or alumna who has “attained great respect on local and regional levels, had a strong impact as a leader in their field and enhanced the reputation of both their organization and UMass Dartmouth,” said the release.

McCormack, who graduated from the university in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering, was named NUWC’s technical director in November 2004.

As technical director, McCormack directs technical activities at NUWC sites across the United States and at its major test ranges worldwide. He is responsible for planning and executing a wide range of technical programs related to aspects of undersea warfare, oversees more than 4,000 employees and has an annual budget of more than $1 billion.

In April 2012, McCormack assumed the additional duties of acting technical director of the Naval Surface Warfare Center. In this position, he is responsible for eight divisions across the U.S., with nearly 15,000 employees and a budget of $6 billion.

“McCormack has had a remarkable impact on shaping the organization, undersea warfare, and the U.S. Navy,” said the NUWC release. “He has leveraged his years of hands-on engineering experience to strengthen critical programs and institute new ones that promise to deliver unparalleled capabilities to the Navy of the future.”

The release went on to laud McCormack’s commitment to NUWC and its outreach efforts. “McCormack has championed cooperative programs with industry and academia and the right partners to deliver the most effective and efficient capabilities to the U.S. Navy.”

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Alumni Association presented McCormack the award during the 2012 Annual Alumni Awards Ceremony on Nov. 8.
