N.Y. law firm banned from work in R.I.

PROVIDENCE – A New York-based law firm will be banned from doing business in Rhode Island as mortgage foreclosure consultants, Attorney General Peter F. Kilmartin announced.
In a Jan. 23 news release, Kilmartin said that the Litwvin Law Firm, its principal and its employees can no longer serve as consultants, solicit customers for mortgage-modification services or promote themselves as providers of those services.
The investigation stemmed from a complaint that the firm charged homeowners steep upfront fees for mortgage-modification services. Through the course of the investigation, it was determined the law firm was in violation of Rhode Island’s Deceptive Trade Practices Act and the Mortgage Foreclosure Consultant Regulation Act. In addition, it was determined the law firm was not licensed to practice in Rhode Island.
Under the terms of the settlement, Litwvin agreed to pay in excess of $8,000 in restitution. •
