PROVIDENCE – Barcelona, Mexico City, Malta, Bordeaux in France, and – Providence!
The New York Times listed the top 52 places to go in 2016, and Rhode Island’s capital city was No. 33 on the list, which also featured exotic locales as Coral Bay in St. John (No. 4), Mozambique (No. 6) and Road of the Seven Lakes in Argentina (No. 15).
Mexico City grabbed the top spot – it was billed as “a metropolis that has it all.” Second place Bordeaux was described as an ancient wine region that gets a “stunning update” and third place Malta as “an affordable Mediterranean playground with a superb climate.”
Providence, a “cobblestone-lined capital,” may be the East Coast’s answer to Portland, Ore., according to the article, which makes note of the “sculpture-studded Creative Mile,” which is part of the redevelopment of the former I-195 land that will include a riverfront park.
Providence, it states, “has the sort of bearded liberalness and ever-rising food scene – including the new restaurant Oberlin, from the duo behind the James Beard nominee Birch – that might feel familiar to residents of Portland, Ore.”
Westerly’s Watch Hill also earned a plug in the piece about Providence. In fact, the feature about Providence included a photo of the Ocean House in Watch Hill.
“An hour away, well-heeled weekenders flock to Watch Hill on Little Narragansett Bay, where a new culinary center at the oceanside Ocean House offers ‘competitive-style’ cooking classes,” it stated.
Other U.S. spots made the list, including Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota (No. 5).
The New York Times said it made the list by contacting its contributing writers for suggestions, and narrowed them down from there. Places expected to be particularly compelling in the coming year were picked.
