Narragansett Boy Scout council merges with S.E. Mass. council

EAST PROVIDENCE – The Narragansett Council, Boy Scouts of America is merging with the Annawon Council, Boy Scouts of America.
Both councils approved the merger, six months in the making, earlier this month. Annawon covers southeastern Massachusetts and nearby towns. Narragansett covers all of Rhode Island; Pawcatuck, a section of Stonington, Conn.; and overlaps with Annawon’s Massachusetts coverage.
“This is a historic step for our council,” said John Mosby, scout executive and CEO of the Narragansett Council. “Exciting times are ahead for us as we build an even greater program for our youth in this expanded territory.”
The newly merged operation, which will take the name of the Narragansett Council, includes 14,000 scouts in Rhode Island, 34 communities in Massachusetts and one in Connecticut. The Narragansett Council’s main headquarters will remain at its current location in East Providence.
Dennis Dion, current volunteer board president of the Annawon Council, has helped lead consolidation during the past year.
“We selected the Narragansett Council for our merger because both of our operations represent the highest ranked scouting councils out of the 12 in the New England area,” said Dion. “Together we are certain our combined program will provide parents in our area with a first-rate option for their child. No other program can provide the same leadership training and character development as scouting.”
The merger will provide resources for all scouts in the area that the individual councils could not provide alone. The consolidation also will strengthen volunteer and professional guidance, providing the scouts and volunteer unit leaders with more facilities, training, and camping programs, leaders said.
The state of Massachusetts is expected to formally approve the merger later this month.
