WALTHAM, Mass. – National Grid has released a statement warning its customers of a new utility bill scam where customers receive requests for payment over the phone.

National Grid electric customers have reportedly received telephone calls from individuals claiming to work for the utility company.

According to the company, the “scammers” demand payment on past due balances for electric accounts and threaten to shut off service immediately if customers do not make an immediate, over-the-phone payment.

In some cases, the caller will tell the customer that they have a dangerous, faulty meter, which will need to be replaced for a substantial fee.

“National Grid never seeks payment of any type over the telephone and urges customers who have received these calls to call the customer contact center immediately,” said the release.

New England-area customers can call (800) 322-3223.
