National Nutrition Month features ‘statewide read’

PROVIDENCE – An estimated 75,000 Rhode Island students at more than 200 schools, libraries, youth programs and health centers will join in an unprecedented statewide reading event on March 11 and 12, featuring Rhode Island Joy Feldman’s children’s book, “Is Hair Made of Donuts?”
“This is an act of solidarity on behalf of the health of our children,” Feldman said. “With the addition of celebrity readers, we have created a unique event of synergy in celebrating good food and good health for our children, and for ourselves.”
Celebrity readers at schools include Gov. Lincoln D. Chafee, Warwick Mayor Scott Avedisian, Central Falls Mayor James A. Diossa, Woonsocket Mayor Leo T. Fontaine, Cranston Mayor Allan W. Fung, Pawtucket Mayor Donald R. Grebien, North Providence Mayor Charles A. Lombardi, Johnston Mayor Joseph M. Polisena, and Providence Mayor Angel Taveras.
Corporate sponsors participating in the statewide reading event are Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, Champion Juicers, Dr. Day Care, East Side Marketplace, Sodexo, UnitedHealthcare of New England, United Natural Foods, Walgreen’s, and Whole Foods Market. The Boys & Girls Club of East Providence is providing administrative support.
“The statewide read demonstrates that are young people can be empowered to make
healthier food choices for themselves, when they can,” said Feldman, who will be wearing her trademark, two-foot high hat of doughnuts. “I literally recruited schools one at a time, and I am exhilarated at the response.”
