PROVIDENCE – It may be spring, but parts of Northwestern Rhode Island could receive as much as 6 inches of snow today, and more snow may be headed this way for the weekend.
National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Simpson said areas along the coast may see only 1 inch of snow, but the storm will continue through sunset, with another inch possibly overnight hitting the eastern portion of the state.
Simpson said today’s temperature could break the record low high set in 1908 of 35 degrees.
“We could get very close to that record, if not break it today,” he said.
The record low was 14 degrees set in 1954, he said.
The total snowfall amount recorded at T.F. Green Airport so far this season is less than the normal amount of 33.3 inches and significantly less than last year’s total of 76.2 inches. This season, 22.8 inches of snow has fallen as of midnight, Simpson said.
As for the potential snowstorm for Saturday, Simpson said it’s too early to tell how much snow the region will receive.
