PROVIDENCE – Today’s snowfall was just the beginning.

While it was the first significant snow for Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts this season, a storm tomorrow is expected to bring another 4 to 8 inches, with areas along the coast receiving more. Eastern Plymouth County and the Cape and islands are expected to receive the brunt of the storm. Early forecasts say between 12 and 24 inches of snow could fall in New Bedford and the Cape and islands.

National Weather Service meteorologist Alan Dunham said that Rhode Island received between 3 and 5 inches in Friday’s snowfall, which prompted school delays and parking bans. Dunham said initial reports show Little Compton received the most snow at 5 inches.
The snow appeared to have little effect on transportation, other than the morning commute. T.F. Green Airport in Warwick had planes departing and arriving on time, according to a spokeswoman.

Dunham said a winter storm watch is in effect Saturday morning through Saturday night for Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts.

Dunham said the normal snowfall amount for the season, as measured at T.F. Green Airport, is 11.6 inches. As of midnight Jan. 5, the airport had recorded 4.4 inches of snow, and the National Weather Service is waiting to hear final snow tallies for Friday’s storm.
