Nearly $1M being returned to commercial energy users

PROVIDENCE – National Grid PLC is returning nearly $1 million to commercial energy users in the form of credit, as a recent tax cut in July went into effect between billing cycles.
National Grid, Rhode Island’s largest utilities company, estimates about 66,800 of the state’s commercial energy users will receive rebates totaling about $940,000, representing an average of $14 per account. The money stems from the companies overpaying after the state cut a 7 percent sales and use energy tax on July 1. The cut happened between billing cycles for the majority of National Grid’s commercial users.
The overpaid amounts will be credited to users’ accounts “in the near future,” according to National Grid spokesman David Graves.
The elimination of the sales and use tax is expected to save commercial energy users more than $20 million each year, according to state estimates. Residential and manufacturer users were already exempt from the tax.
