NeighborWorks gives $560K to 3 nonprofits

Posted 2/10/12

PROVIDENCE – The NeighborWorks America program has awarded three nonprofits in Providence and Woonsocket a combined $560,000 to develop affordable housing and counsel struggling homeowners, U.S. Sen. Jack Reed announced this week.

Between the three grants, $296,000 will go to the West Elmwood Housing Development Corp. in Providence, $211,835 will go to NeighborWorks Blackstone River Valley in Woonsocket and $56,400 will go to CommunityWorks Rhode Island in Providence.

The money will provide counseling for homeowners on the brink of foreclosure, be used to convert vacant properties into affordable housing, educate first-time homebuyers, produce high-quality rental properties and, generally, stabilize hard-hit neighborhoods in Providence and Woonsocket.

“These federal funds will be leveraged to provide an array of affordable housing services and help build stronger neighborhoods and communities,” Reed said in a news release. “From revitalizing neighborhoods to rehabbing existing homes and building new affordable housing, Rhode Island’s NeighborWorks partners have been leaders in innovative housing and community development projects.”
