Neighborhood Health Plan CEO leaves to take new job

PROVIDENCE – Mark Reynolds, president and CEO of Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island, has resigned after seven years to take a new job as president and CEO of CRICO, the patient safety and medical professional liability company serving the Harvard Medical Community.

James Hooley will serve as interim CEO while Neighborhood conducts a national search, aided by health care leadership consultants Zurick Davis, according to Neighborhood officials. Hooley currently sits on the health insurer’s board of directors and previously served as CEO of Neighborhood Health Plan of Massachusetts.

Neighborhood currently serves more than 92,000 members, 66 percent of the Medicaid managed care market in Rhode Island, which represents nearly half of the total Rhode Island Medicaid enrollees.

Neighborhood Health Plan participates in four Medicaid programs: RIte Care (families with low to moderate income), Children with Special Healthcare Needs, children in the Rhode Island foster care system, and Rhody Health Partners (Medicaid-only adults with disabilities).

Over the last year, Mr. Reynolds has led efforts to prepare Neighborhood for new opportunities, including serving the dually eligible (Medicaid/Medicare) and Medicaid expansion (adults with low income without dependents) populations.

“Mark has been instrumental in the success of Neighborhood,” said Merrill Thomas, chairman of the board of Neighborhood Health Plan and CEO of Providence Community Health Centers. “Under his leadership, Neighborhood has maintained its reputation as one of the best Medicaid health plans in the country, ranked number five in the country by the National Committee on Quality Assurance in 2012.

“I have greatly enjoyed my seven years at Neighborhood, and I have not made this decision easily,” Reynolds said. “I will miss the dedicated people who make Neighborhood a great organization, but I look forward to my new role and working closer to my home in Boston.”

Lt. Gov. Elizabeth H. Roberts praised the leadership role that Reynolds has played to develop a health care delivery system of the future. “Mark’s leadership and innovative thinking will be missed. I look forward to Neighborhood Health Plan, with its special experience in serving vulnerable populations, continuing to contribute significantly to the effort of health care reform in our state,” she said.
