PROVIDENCE – Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island is moving its headquarters from Providence to Smithfield starting next month.
Tom Boucher, Neighborhood’s senior manager for communications and public affairs, said the move is expected to take five years, with the first phase beginning Jan. 11 when approximately 200 employees, mostly medical management staff, will move from the Promenade Street office to 910 Douglas Pike, into a building previously occupied by Citizens Bank.
Boucher, who said Neighborhood has approximately 435 employees, said the move is being done to accommodate growth and consolidate operations, as offices now are scattered throughout multiple spots on the Foundry campus. He said the company has 45 job openings, ranging from nurses and social workers to public policy staff, and expects even more growth in the year ahead.
He also said that Neighborhood plans to continue to have a presence in Providence, but “we’re not sure what that’s going to look like at this point.”
According to the company profile on its website, Neighborhood, a nonprofit HMO, serves more than 175,000 members. It was founded in December 1993 by the state’s 13 community health centers and the Rhode Island Health Center Association in response to the initiation of RIte Care, Rhode Island’s Medicaid-managed care program.
It serves families with low- to moderate income, children with special health care needs, children in the Rhode Island foster care system, and Medicaid-only adults with disabilities, among others. It also serves individuals and small businesses through HealthSource RI, the state’s health benefits exchange.
