CRANSTON – Rhode Island’s third-largest city also is one of the best in the country for women in the workforce.
NerdWallet, a personal finance website, said it analyzed 529 cities to come up with the top 100 for women in the workforce.
It looked at such factors as average unemployment rate, women’s median earnings as a percentage of men’s median earnings, median gross rent as a percentage of women’s median monthly earnings and difference between men and women in the workforce as measured by the participation rate.
Based on those factors, Cranston landed in the 31st spot. It showed that women’s median earnings were 89.7 percent of men’s in 2014, and median monthly rent was 25.1 percent of women’s median earnings. Cranston also has more women than men in the workforce, by 2.9 percentage points.
Minnesota held the top spots, with Rochester first, Minneapolis second and St. Paul, third.
NerdWallet said it found that women take home approximately 80 cents for every $1 that men earn.
