If only more businesses had the success that Project Turn Grease Into Fuel has had.
A project started seven years ago by eight elementary school students (six remain involved, and are sophomores in high school), TGIF has signed on 132 restaurants and 15 municipalities in Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts to donate used grease that is processed into biodiesel by Newport Biodiesel.
The money that the institutions would have paid to have their grease refined is instead donated to charities and shelters, $126,000 so far.
The students have dreams to grow the program into all six New England states, and with their success rate so far, it is difficult to imagine that they won’t be able to accomplish that goal. Just as soon as they earn their driver’s licenses, of course. •
