New Bedford pledges $100K for museum

NEW BEDFORD – Mayor Jon Mitchell last week said that $100,000 of the city’s Community Development Block Grant money will go towards a renovation intended to create a fishing museum in the city, Southcoasttoday.com reported.
The project, which carries an estimated cost of $2 million, would renovate Mariners’ Home and part of the Seaman’s Bethel into a museum. Mitchell made the announcement at the New Bedford Whaling Museum during the Taste the Port fundraiser.
A capital-building fund is looking to raise $500,000. Those funds would be matched by the state, the website said.
“The fishing industry hasn’t been recognized like the whaling and textile industries,” said Fred Toomey, president of the New Bedford Port Society. •
