New CEO named to South County Tourism Council

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – A new president and CEO has been hired to lead the South County Tourism Council.
Louise Bishop started in the position June 8, replacing Myrna George. A five-member search committee conducted a nationwide search to find George’s replacement, receiving more than 50 applications for the job.
The nonprofit South County Tourism Council represents the towns of Coventry, Charlestown, East Greenwich, Exeter, Hopkinton, Narragansett, North Kingstown, Richmond, South Kingstown, West Greenwich and Westerly.
George, who was slated to retire in mid-March after more than 13 years in the position, stayed on longer due to the delayed launch of the state tourism campaign, according to information from the council.
George will remain as SCTC creative director and legislative liaison, to ensure a smooth transition, the council said.
The search committee included board members from the Tomaquag Museum, Ocean House, Yawgoo Valley Ski & Recreational Area, Charlestown Mini Super and several local businesses.
Bishop “has the right set of skills, attitude and enthusiasm to lead the South County Tourism Council to the next level,” search committee member Loren Spears, acting chair, said in a statement.
Bishop previously worked for Buffalo Lodging in Coventry as a sales director.
“The South County Tourism Council region is a model of successful tourism development that any destination marketing professional would love to be a part of,” Bishop said in a statement.
