New E.G. school set to be finished

EAST GREENWICH – The last phase of construction on the new $40 million Archie R. Cole Middle School in East Greenwich, the electrical work, was completed this month, Wayne J. Griffin, the electrical contractor on the project said.

The massive three-story 105,000-square-foot middle school, which was built adjacent to the old school building, opened to students in the spring, but work has continued to put the finishing touches on the project.

The new electrical systems include an interactive solar panel system, emergency generator, integrated telecommunications system, energy efficient lighting and a “data acquisition” system that displays the state-of-the-art environmentally-friendly building features.

The new school will house East Greenwich students in grades six through eight, while the old building had space for only grades seven and eight.

The project was built by Gilbane Building Co. of Providence.

Now that the new building is done, crews will begin demolishing the old school building next door.
