New England Tech hosts Power Game Day

EAST GREENWICH – The New England Institute of Technology hosted a 24-hour game jam on Oct. 21 with about 160 attendees.

The second annual Power Game Day began at 8 a.m. with presentations from faculty of the Video Game Development and Design Department. In the afternoon, 50 students participated in the 24-hour Game Jam to create a Harry Potter themed video game.

The nine teams, ranging from two to eight students, created video games ranging from side-scrolling games, top-down games, and some in 3D. The platforms that they used to create the games were: Flash, Unity 3d and C++.

“We had our first Game Jam a few months ago. It’s amazing to see how the students learn from their previous experience. They paced themselves much better over the 24 –hours. There was great team work and communication between team members. In the end, each team created a solid, working game based on the theme. It’s a great experience that enhances the learning from the classroom in a practical way. All we keep hearing from the students is, ‘When is the next Game Jam?’ ” said Bill Culbertson, assistant professor game development and design.
